People want to kill Napoles, lawyer says

Janet-Lim-Napoles.13MANILA – The lawyer of businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, said the threat on the life of her client has boiled over, and is one of the reasons why Napoles decided to turn herself in.

“’Yung genuine threat is everywhere. Mayroon ngang storya ang isang taxi driver na narinig namin na sinabi ng driver na kapag nakita niya si Mrs. Napoles ay sasagaan na lang niya. These remarks come from common taxi drivers, these come from everyone,” she told reporters hours after Napoles was transferred to the Makati City Jail.

Kapunan believes Napoles has already been prejudged by the public and is now painted as guilty even if the investigation on the alleged P10 billion pork barrel scam is still ongoing.

“That is what is the tendency of most of us who read just one side of the story. Having learned the whole story behind what really happened and knowing now that these whistleblowers are being used by the powers-that-be to blame her, we are now anxious na matuloy na ang investigation na ‘yan para lumabas kung sino ang talagang nagnakaw sa PDAF,” said Kapunan.

Napoles surrendered to President Aquino Wednesday hours after a P10 million bounty was offered by the government for her arrest.

Kapunan said the bounty, as well as reports that Napoles was heavily guarded by armed men, jeopardized her safety.

“What is to prevent people who want to silence her forever to say na nag-resist arrest siya at nag-fire ang kanyang bodyguards at patayin siya? The P10 million reward is not a small incentive,” said Kapunan.

Kapunan added that she is thankful that Napoles is now in custody and safe, regardless if she is detained in a small space.

“Comfort is the least of our worries,” she said.

Napoles was transferred to the Makati City Jail at around 11:20 p.m. Thursday after being detained overnight at Camp Crame.

She was handcuffed and wore a bulletproof vest during the transfer.

Interior Sec. Mar Roxas said Napoles will be detained in a separate air-conditioned room and will be watched by 2 female guards at all times.

Napoles’ lawyers have filed a motion of reconsideration, requesting that Napoles be detained instead at Camp Crame or Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig.

Freeze order

Kapunan also cried foul over the freeze order on Napoles’ financial assets, saying it has affected not only Napoles’ children but also her relatives not involved in the alleged scam.

“The freeze order for her children is for 6 months. So hindi na sila kakain? Hindi na sila pwede pumunta sa eskwelahan?” she said.

Kapunan issued a challenge to authorities to also freeze the accounts of the 82 alleged bogus non-government organizations named in the Commission on Audit (COA) report as well as the accounts of the lawmakers tagged in the controversy.

“Our challenge to whoever caused the freezing of the accounts is freeze as well accounts of the family members of these senators and congressmen, the accounts of their children. Let’s see if they have the political will to do that,” she said.

The Court of Appeals’ (CA) freeze order covers a total of around 415 accounts linked to Napoles, according to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.

Out of the 415 accounts, de Lima said 107 are in the name of Napoles herself.
