Capone’s ghost haunts Romney

Kaleidoscope
By Perry Diaz

The recent brouhaha about Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s refusal to disclose his tax returns prior to 2010 is causing a lot of political migraine for Romney.  It simply wouldn’t go away.  Even his wife Ann has been trying to assuage the American public that there is nothing in those tax returns that is not right.  She said, “We’ve given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and about how we live our life, and so the election will not be decided on that.  It will be decided on who will turn the economy around, and how will jobs come back to America.”  But if there was nothing that could hurt Romney, why hide them?

Yes, why hide them if there is nothing to hide?  And there is only one logical and practical answer: Mitt Romney is hiding something.  If so, what is he hiding?  Of course, he’d say, he’s not hiding anything, which is so absurd that even some Republican leaders are telling him to disclose everything from as far back as 20 years.

But what if he’s really hiding something that would scuttle his presidential campaign and lose the election to President Barack Obama?  If that was the case, then he would rather not disclose and instead take a big chance that the American voters love him so much that they’d forgive him for keeping whatever secrets he’s hiding in his tax returns.

But the problem is that the American voters are not enamored with Mitt.  As a matter of fact, the USA Today/Gallup poll taken in May 1-2 shows that his 31% “likability” rating among voters is much lower than Obama’s 60%.  And if these voters who like Romney would vote for him regardless of what’s hidden in those tax returns, then he would lose the elections to Obama provided all other factors remain the same until election time.

In other words, Romney is in big trouble!  And big trouble I mean just like the kind of “big trouble” Chicago mob kingpin Al Capone had in 1931 when the U.S. government nailed him for tax evasion.

But can the U.S. government do that to Mitt Romney, who would be the next president provided he’d beat Obama by just one electoral vote?  Yes, Romney is just one electoral vote from the presidency come November 6, 2012.  And he can get that one electoral vote over Obama if he’d convince voters in seven battleground states that he is their man.  But he has to win in all battleground states to get that one electoral vote plurality over Obama.  However, if he’d lose just one battleground state to Obama, it’s over for him.  Yes, it’s all seven battleground states or nothing!

So, what is he going to do to win all seven battleground states?  With the Obama campaign endlessly attacking Romney and reminding the voters that he’s hiding something in his tax returns, which could be as bad as paying no taxes in those years prior to 2010… and, lest I forget, last year, 2011.  Which reminds me that he did not file his 2011 tax returns last April 15 but instead he requested for a filing extension, which is due on October 15.  He promised that he would disclose his 2011 tax returns by that time.  If he would do that, does that mean that he’s not hiding anything in his 2011 tax returns?  Yes, it would be fair to presume that if he’d disclose his 2011 tax returns, he’s not hiding anything.  But then again, the voters would ask him why he’s not disclosing his tax returns prior to 2010 if he’s not hiding anything in those years?

It looks like Mitt Romney’s head is caught in a vise that is slowly tightening, as election time is getting nearer.

Well, he just might decide to hell with it, he will disclose his tax returns and explain as much as he can why he did not pay taxes or if he did why it’s not as much as every American middle class taxpayer paid?  Oh, shucks!  And that’s where it’s could really hurt him.  How could he explain why he paid lesser taxes than the middle class taxpayers or, worst, zero taxes?  Ugh!  That’s going to really hurt him.  Simply put, there is no acceptable excuse to the American voters why a presidential candidate did not pay taxes!

Well, he might try the “I’m sorry, I blew it” approach.  He can go on television, fall on his knees, jerk a few teardrops from his eyes, and beg for forgiveness from the American people.  Then he’d promise to amend his tax returns and pay his shortage including interest and penalty.  He’d promise to donate $100 million to charitable organizations.  He’d promise not to receive his salary.  He’d promise to serve only for one term.  He’d promise to be kind to dogs and donate $50 million to SPCA.  He’d promise… well… He’d promise anything just to get the American people to give him a second chance.

But would the American people forgive him after spilling his emotions on national television?  Maybe… Might be.  And would they vote for him?  Hmm…  That might be too much to ask.   Would the American people forgive him and also vote for him?

Then, Al Capone — or was it his ghost? – appeared out of nowhere.  “Mitt,” Capone whispered, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”  “What?  Who are you?”  Romney shouted at the top of his voice.  “Shh….” Capone answered, “Be quiet and listen to me.  This is Al Capone.”  “Heck, no!  You’re dead… you’ve been dead a long time ago!” Mitt said.  Then, he looked at Ann who was nudging him, “Mitt! Wake up!  Wake up! You’re having a nightmare!”  “Huh?” Mitt said, “Nightmare?  Gee, that was a horrible dream.”

    Hi Perry,
With due respect, allow me to play “devils advocate.” I’m providing a direct response to your above Article. In the interest of disclosure, the following Attachment was acquired from GodFather Politics, July 21,2012 post.

“Why is Barack Obama Afraid to Release His College Records?”

Also, In the interest fairness, it would be best your readers be final arbiters of the authenticity of all Articles involved, be they be both authentic and true or not.

If both found true, what would be a greater crime to America – not adhering to the letter and spirit of the Constitution or using legal loopholes to pay lesser taxes?

In the world of political hypocrisy, Barack Obama and other Democrats have been attacking Mitt Romney for not releasing more of his federal income tax returns than he has. Ironically, both Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, who have been quite vocal on the topic, refuse to release any of their tax returns.

Coming to Romney’s defense, Donald Trump is advocating that Romney and the rest of the GOP should demand to see Obama’s records before Romney should release any more of his. Trump is not referring to Obama’s tax returns but to his birth and college records.

“Nobody has more sealed records than this president. So many of his applications … are sealed. He spent $3 million to keep everything sealed. You can’t find out anything about his college. I’m not talking about his marks. I’m talking about his application. It would be so interesting to see.”

If you go searching for Obama’s college records, you will quickly discover that all of his records from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard law School have all been sealed. If Trump is right in that Obama has spent $3 million sealing all of his records, it really pours fuel of the fires of conspiracy and makes one wonder what is so damaging in those records to warrant such extreme measures be taken to protect them.

The only thing I can think of that Obama would be so concerned about would be his place of birth listed on his college applications. Is it possible that these documents list someplace other than Hawaii as his place of birth? Is it possible that they, like New York publisher Acton and Dystel, list one Barack Hussein Obama as being born in Kenya?
I just wish we had at least one member of Congress with the courage to investigate Obama’s records and even issue a congressional subpoena for those records to see what the president is so afraid of revealing. But alas, it seems that they don’t care or have been too intimidated by the powers behind Obama that they are very afraid of launching such an investigation.

In the meantime, what many of us believe to be the greatest fraud in the history of mankind will continue to get away with the crime of the millennia.

      Hi ML,

Obama’s birth certificate is not an issue. The state of Hawaii released his long-form birth certificate. The reason why Obama couldn’t release it before was because the state of Hawaii keeps the only original copy of all birth certificates. Hawaii changed its legislation so it can release Obama’s birth certificate. If you don’t believe that, then stop reading the rest of my response and move on.

Now, Obama’s college transcripts — like everybody else — are confidential. You can’t force anyone to disclose his or her college transcripts.

In regard to tax returns, if a person is running for president, he or she is obliged to show that he paid his or her taxes fairly and honestly. The American voters have every right to a candidate’s tax returns. Now, if the candidate doesn’t release his or her tax returns, that’s his or her choice. However, that would give the voters the impression that the candidate is hiding something from the voters. As a voter, I would not vote for a candidate who refused to disclose his or her tax returns. It’s as simple as that.

      Perry

      • Yes Perry, like the way Holder refuses to release those documents regarding Fast and Furious debacle. You are a business owner and I’m sure that you also file all taxes in accordance with the law. If there were anomalies with the way you filed your taxes, I’m sure the IRS will be on your doorsteps wanting to give you an audit. I imagine they would have done the same thing with Romney if there were serious problems with the way he filed his taxes. And about Obama, his social security number comprise of numbers normally issued to people living in Connecticut and there’s no evidence that Obama was even a residence of that state. And by the way, do you feel better now knowing that if it was’nt for someone else, you never would have succeeded in your business?

        • perry says:

          Hi Noah,

You can get your Social Security card anywhere in the U.S. Connecticut is a very small state. You can go to Connecticut by just crossing the bridge from New York. Come on, is that the only issue you have against Obama? Please don’t waste my time.

In regard to tax returns, my op-ed explains where I stood on this issue. You may have different opinion on this issue and I have no problem with that. The bottom line is: If Romney is not hiding anything, why doesn’t he release it? It’s a no-brainer.

          Perry

    • ML, I came to this country in 1965 and during those times, Black Americans referred to themselves as Negro or Colored. I remember getting my ass beat because I called one of my classmate Black African. Those terms did’nt even exist and yet the birth certificate that Obama released to the public shows that his father’s race was African.

    Hi Perry

I bring you in very high regard as an outstanding spokesperson for all global humans of Filipino blood; of course, these in areas and issues relative to what we can say and write for the betterment of the Philippines, the place of our birth. I applaud your commentaries; I admire your sense of wisdom and fairness in all things that come off your very brilliant mind.

But lo and behold, let me impart to you we have opposing American political views. I shall not enumerate here all the reasons why it is my hope President Obama will not be reelected. But suffice it to say as a United States Navy Veteran having serving almost 30 years of active naval service, I do not wish for the United States of America—my adopted country that bestowed blessings upon me, that afforded me opportunities to become what I am from once upon a time then one of the poorest of the poor in the Philippines–to become transformed as a socialist state.

Considering the current state of affairs of the United States and the world, I do not find President Obama that rightful leader that shall bring back the United States that superpower stature highly regarded and respected by all nations on the surface of this great planet earth.

With all due respect, President Obama needs to be replaced.

    • perry says:

      Hi Pat,

I respect your opinion as much as you respect mine. Unfortunately, we differ in opinion who is the better leader between Obama and Romney. But let me share with you my political background: I am a Republican since 1983 and had supported and worked in every presidential campaign since Reagan’s re-election campaign in 1984 through George W. Bush in 2004. In 2008, I supported Barack Obama because of what George W. Bush did to our economy during his presidency.

Obama got us out of the Great Recession that started in 2007 and which ended in June 2009 when Obama finally arrested the plummeting economy caused by the Great Recession. The biggest culprit that destroyed our economy and plunged us into big deficit and increasing national debt is the Bush tax cuts in 2001.

If you remember, Bush inherited a big surplus from Bill Clinton. Then he maneuvered into giving tax breaks and tax cuts to the wealthy, which ended with the Clinton surplus to zero. But the tax cuts and tax breaks continued. With the Clinton surplus money gone, where did Bush get the money to fund the tax breaks and tax cuts to the rich? That’s when he started borrowing money. When he took over in 2001, the national debt was about $4 trillion. When he left in in January 2009, the national debt went up to $12 trillion! But the deficit continued after Obama was forced by the GOP to agree not to let the Bush tax cuts and tax breaks expire at the end of 2010. So the national debt continued to rise.

Pat, unless the government remove the Bush tax cuts and tax break, the national debt would continue to increase next year. Obama promised that he’d let the Bush tax cuts and tax breaks expire at the end of 2012 while Romney vowed to continue them and also give more tax cuts and tax breaks to the rich at the expense of the middle class, which includes you and I.

Obama is not a socialist. I know that. I know what a socialist is and Obama is no socialist. That’s a lie that the rightwingers are spreading.

But believe me, I know what a real conservative is and there aren’t that many around anymore. The Tea Party has taken over the GOP. It’s not the GOP of Lincoln and Reagan that I know of.

I am still a registered Republican but I’m now part of a growing number of independent Republicans.

      All the best,
      Perry

  3. Romy Monteyro says:

I agree that Obama’s college transcripts are confidential and it’s also true that he cannot be forced to reveal them. They can, however, be subpoenad to establish the truth, either r by a court of law or Congress. I don ‘ know about you, Perry, but I and millions of other American voters would like to know the truth. Obama came to this country from Indonesia as an Indonesian citizen. His name then was Barry Soetoro. On his arrival he enrolled in college. Did he enroll as BS or BO? If he applied and was granted financial assistance, was the grant given to him as a foreign student? If he did, and he is really a US citizen, did he not commit a fraud? At Columbia and Harvard he was known as BHO and a US citizen. When did he revert to US citizenship from Indonesian? And why did he choose to spend $3 million dollars in legal fees to prevent disclosure of his college records? The Dems are pressuring Romney to release more ITRs. Isn’t it only fair that Obama should also make public his college record? Fair is fair! I know you want Obama to win reelection. That is your right and privilege. Vis-a-vis, it is also my right and privilege to say’ “don’t hold your breath.” Have a nice day, my friend!

    • perry says:

      Hi Romy,

The truth about Obama’s birth has been out. It’s a “dead horse” issue. He’s been president for 3.5 years and has earned the trust of the people. That’s the reason that in spite of the black propaganda being waged against him, his likability rating remains high — 60% to Romney’s 31 %. That just shows that the American people trust Obama more than Romney. My experience is that when it comes to electing a president, the American people would vote for someone they trust.

Romy, I’ve been involved in American politics — as a Republican activist for 25 years — and I know what American voters are looking for in a presidential candidate: an honest and pragmatic centrist. Extremists — either from the left or the right — don’t win in presidential elections.

      Perry

      • Apollodr says:

Yes we agree a lot is being said in the media about Mitt Romney not being “likable” or that he doesn’t “relate well” to people. Frankly, we struggled to understand why. So after much research, we have come up with a Top Ten List to explain this “unlikablility.”

Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:

        1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting’s #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.

        2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.

        3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)

        4. Can’t speak in a fake, southern, “black preacher voice” when necessary.

        5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School…and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.

        6. Doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today’s America?

        7. Represents an America of “yesterday”, where people believed in God, went to Church, didn’t screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!

        8. Has a family of five great sons….and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that “choice” deserves America’s scorn.

        9. Oh yes…..he’s a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

        10. And one more point…..pundits say because of his wealth, he can’t relate to ordinary Americans. I guess that’s because he made that money HIMSELF…..as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad. Apparently, he didn’t understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money made you unrelatable to Americans.

My goodness, it’s a strange world, isn’t it?

        • perry says:

          Hi Apollodr,

Well said, David Letterman would pay you a hefty royalty to use this in his show. May I include No. 11, which explains why he can’t win? “He can’t talk convincingly.”

          Perry

        • Apollodr, you are right about the world being strange. I guess it would’nt be that way if everyone just stick with one religion, Catholism mostly. And those who made something of themselves by hard work and perseverance must share everything with those who had nothing because they were just too lazy to get of their fat ass and do something. Let me tell you what makes this world even stranger it’s people like us (Filipinos). We are a strange bunch, we are a good example of what your worthless president described when he made a comment that there’s no way you could’ve been successful without the help of someone or something else. Our attitude is always, why should I do that when someone else could do it for me, and in most cases to have it done for nothing. Our country is all fucked up because of this attitude, people are starving and yet the government are always looking for a hand out from generous countries. Actually, the world is not strange, it’s the people themselves. Romney is by no means perfect, he is dislike by people like you because he accomplished something that you and the rest us may not be able to do in our lifetime. If Obama wins, just make sure that your life is prepared for what this country would become, and there are millions of Americans can see doomsday coming.

      Hi Tony,

Thanks for your feedback. I try to be as objective as possible.

      Perry

      • pat talens says:

Appreciate your intelligent rebuttals, Perry. But I take the United States, being the leader of the free World, can not afford to take risks for another term for President Obama.
This great country must turn around and regain its footing as a very respected world economic power. Under his leadership, powerful nations such as China, Russia especially under Putin no longer give much regard to the US.
Having lived much of my adult life here, I see the US, with Obama at the helm of political power, in its downward spiral to a semi-socialist state. It is imperative—a new leader must be at hand.

        • perry says:

Sorry, Pat. Romney wants the government to revert to the unregulated policies of George W. that caused the financial meltdown in 2008. He also wants to continue giving tax breaks and tax cuts to the rich at the expense of the middle class. Her also wants to end the federalized RomneyCare (aka ObamaCare) and put 50 million Americans (who were uninsured before ObamaCare) on the back of the American taxpayers. he also endorsed the Paul Ryan budget plan that will kill Medicare and Social Security, cut food stamp programs, cut the student programs, ban birth control, deport children of illegal immigrants, federalize the “Stand Your Ground” Law (aka “license to kill”), remove gun control, repeal environmental protection laws, gut public education, give zero tax to corporations, and pass the tax burden to the middle class and the working poor.

Folks, is this what middle class Americans want? If so, vote for Romney.

          Perry

        • Pat, I guess you and I are reading the same sheet of music. There was another person who reminded me so much of Obama. He was a good orator, he mesmerized his audience with his thoughts and ideas on how the rest of the world should be ruled. Constantly spewing lies about minorities and eventually managed to convince a whole generation to rid this world of what he considered sub-human individuals. Sure, he was a perfect leader for his country, he provided free education, free medical care and almost everything his people need . He made all of these possible by taking away the wealth of those who worked hard and shared it to his so called perfect race of people. Our country is not far from that scenario now. This president want the rich to share their hard earned money and give it to those that are too damn lazy to do something for themselves, and the sad part is that most of these people have been doing this all their life. All I can say to you my fellow veteran is, I hope that in the event that this worthless president gets another four years that he leave our benefits alone. I truly feel that our country is heading for doomsday.

          • RomY Monteyro says:

Bravo Noah! I am a veteran too and I could not have said it better. The four years of Obama in office has shown his mettle as a world leader which translate to zero. Too bad our friend Perry believes Americans trust Obama and will reelect him. Sad to say I don’t know if Perry and us live on the same planet. Romney may not be the best there is, but to paraphrase an old saying I’d rather take a chance on the devil I don’t know, than the devil I already know has destroyed too much of this country and its many values we all love. If the choice then in this coming election is between two evils, I’ll go for the lesser one. At least I know I’ll be voting for a real American! More power to you!

  6. pat talens says:

I love you still, Perry albeit our contrasting American political views. You are a bulwark and an indispensable voice for honest and reliable government and politics in the Philippines. Of course, no hurt feelings here about USA’s.

I wish to put some laughter in these so serious thoughts about politics. wish to share this with your avid readers…he he he

Its tough for a community to succeed when over 50% of kids are raised with no fathers, a lot of girls are giving birth at a very young age with no secure relationships. Cal a spade a spade and address the real issues instead of putting out political incentives and more handouts, if I may dare say so.

What about kids of other races; Filipinos, Hispanics including Central Americans, South Americans, Chinese, Brazilians, and people from other races? Are we chopped liver that in America, a President specifically issues a program just to try to prop up and enhance one(1) race?

    Obama Issues Racist Executive Order

On Thursday Barack Obama Issued a racist Executive Order. The Order titled, White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans sets forth a new policy for a group of people that is pretty vast is just taken at face value. After all, this could also refer to many whites because Africa is a continent, not a nation. However, the people in view here are those with dark skin, not Caucasians.

    Here’s Obama’s policy:

Over the course of America’s history, African American men and women have strengthened our Nation, including by leading reforms, overcoming obstacles, and breaking down barriers. In the less than 60 years since the Brown v. Board of Education decision put America on a path toward equal educational opportunity, America’s educational system has undergone a remarkable transformation, and many African American children who attended the substandard segregated schools of the 1950s have grown up to see their children attend integrated elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities.

However, substantial obstacles to equal educational opportunity still remain in America’s educational system. African Americans lack equal access to highly effective teachers and principals, safe schools, and challenging college-preparatory classes, and they disproportionately experience school discipline and referrals to special education. African American student achievement not only lags behind that of their domestic peers by an average of two grade levels, but also behind students in almost every other developed nation. Over a third of African American students do not graduate from high school on time with a regular high school diploma, and only four percent of African American high school graduates interested in college are college-ready across a range of subjects. An even greater number of African American males do not graduate with a regular high school diploma, and African American males also experience disparate rates of incarceration.

Significantly improving the educational outcomes of African Americans will provide substantial benefits for our country by, among other things, increasing college completion rates, productivity, employment rates, and the number of African American teachers. Enhanced educational outcomes lead to more productive careers, improved economic opportunity, and greater social well-being for all Americans. Complementing the role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in preparing generations of African American students for successful careers, and the work of my Administration’s separate White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, this new Initiative’s focus on improving all the sequential levels of education will produce a more effective educational continuum for all African American students.

To reach the ambitious education goals we have set for our Nation, as well as to ensure equality of access and opportunity for all, we must provide the support that will enable African American students to improve their level of educational achievement through rigorous and well-rounded academic and support services that will prepare them for college, a career, and a lifetime of learning.

So we are going to do something different for black children than for whites? Hmmmm, I’m thinking there needs to be a new organization called the NAAWP (National Association for the Advancement of White People). I’m sure that would get the movers and shakers in our nation talking. Why is it that there can be special treatment for a particular ethnic group and it not be considered racist, but if I wanted to form the “National Society of Whities” it would be?

    The EO’s mission states:

    (1) The Initiative will help to restore the United States to its role as the global leader in education; strengthen the Nation by improving educational outcomes for African Americans of all ages; and help ensure that African Americans receive a complete and competitive education that prepares them for college, a satisfying career, and productive citizenship.

    (2) The Initiative will complement and reinforce the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Initiative established by Executive Order 13532 of February 26, 2010, and together, they both will support enhanced educational outcomes for African Americans at every level of the American education system, including early childhood education; elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education; career and technical education; and adult education.

    (3) To help expand educational opportunities, improve educational outcomes, and deliver a complete and competitive education for all African Americans.

All of this is not about “restoring the United States to its role as the global leader in education.” It is about preferential treatment based on color of skin and even worse it’s at the federal level. The federal government has to be the worst place to think about setting policy for education. Because of the federal government’s intervention in education America now lags behind Russia and Finland in literacy. We also fall well behind many countries in math and science.

By the way, lots of nice new shiny official titles will be given out and lots of bureaucratic committees and such will be formed. I assume Barack Obama will also claim that this creates jobs for which he’ll pat himself on the back. This is a serious demonstration of racism in the White House and yes I’m calling the President of the United States a racist. I’m sure Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and the Congressional Black Caucus will be 1005 behind this special treatment of an ethnic group.

Editor’s note: I am not racist. I used the NAAWP and the National Society of Whities in jest.
