MANILA, Philippines – Contrary to claims by her husband, Marissa Lapid said the money confiscated from her by United States airport officials is for a “house.”

Senator Lito Lapid said on Thursday that his wife had no malicious intentions with the money found by US airport officials in her luggage in the Las Vegas International Airport.

Lapid said her wife Marissa needed it for the treatment of her heart condition. “Medyo naharang siya doon dahil sobra ang dala niyang pera siguro dahil nagpapagamot siya dahil may sakit siya eh,” the senator had said.

Marissa was arrested after arriving at the Las Vegas International Airport last Jan. 15. The arrest was based on a warrant issued last Jan. 5 for allegedly smuggling $50,000 in cash last Nov. 27.

In a copy of the arrest warrant obtained by ABS-CBN North America News Bureau’s Bev Llorente, the senator’s wife said she only had with her $10,000 and P10,000 in cash.

A Customs and Border Patrol officer said: “Lapid explained that she answered ‘no’ to question number 13 on the CBP form 6059b because of her understanding that the question specifically applied currency over 10 thousand US dollars.”

“I’m sorry, it’s for my house,” Marissa supposedly said. “I screwed up,” she also supposedly said several times.

Upon final inspection, the money contained in her bag was worth $50,137 and P15,700 ($356).

Customs officers gave back only $493.

She is currently out on bail. She will be wearing an ankle monitoring system while waiting for her case before the US District Court in Nevada. The hearing will be held on February 7 there.

O puwede
rin galig sa pagbenta ninyo ng buhangin? Pero kung ganoon man, hindi
ba at dapat and perang iyon ay sa gubyerno pupunta?

Unlike what her husband the Sen Lapid said, I do not think the money came from Mrs. Lapid’s business owning rental properties. I do not think one can earn that much by
    renting in Porac, Pampanga.

if the money came from her husband, the $50,000 amount represents about 3 times the annual salary. So, where did the money come from?

Millions of Filipinos are dying of malnutrition, hunger and diseases, while the dirty
politicians and their families are squirreling away questionable money and buying expensive real estate around the world.

When will these corrupt politicians learn? For all I care, 5 years in prison is a short jail term for people like Marissa Lapid.

It will be nice if one can get a copy of her Las Vegas Police Dept. mug shot and put in Facebook.

Same old excuse, her husband wasq saying it’s for her medical expenses here in the US, then she’s telling the US officials it’s for her house. The pattern of deception on the part of this couple is unbelievable. They can’t even coordinate on what excuse they are going to use. These people are the ones that are actually putting our country on the spot and if this kind BS continues, our country will never get off that list of the most corrupt country in the world.

  3. Pat Talens says:

Mr Lito Lapid is a senator-judge in Corona’s impeachment???What a joke. Only the Filipinos I blame for this tragedy of making Lapid a senator and more so as a senator-judge.

What has he done to deserve his wealth and prestige as a Philippine Senator???Perhaps in fairness to him, there exist others—senators and congressmen—like him nonetheless.

Perhaps it is due time to amend the Constitution and laws to drastically reduce in half (or more) the number of Philippine Senators. The meager riches of the country siphoned to these incompetent and corrupt so-called legislators and their staff and affluent spaces can best be utilized in helping the poor and victims of misfortune in the country.

Sorry guys I am unable to temper my words. This is now becoming over my top—in thinking of corrupt politicians judging another corrupt CJ, and in observing impeachment lawyers and counsels trying to create excuses, trying to twist minds, and trying to obstruct revelations of truth that is for the greater good of the country.

Hence I am gonna start exercising more and watching movies in my giant flat tv than to know and observe these very chaotic, disturbing Philippine politics. Buti pa mag relax na lang ako.

Mr. Talens the political situation in our country in my opinion is a lost cause. I’m afraid that whatever is in the horizon for our beloved country we are not going to be around to witness it. I think we are a good example of what Charles Darwin called part of the evolutionary process, instead of evolving forward we seem to be going backwards.

“I would rather have a country run like hell by Filipinos than a country run like heaven by the Americans, because however a bad Filipino government might be, we can always change it.” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Quezon#cite_note-9

Pero hangtud karon, more than 72 years already, the government is still the same – run like hell by colonial Filipinos. And the people are still running around like crabs.

Just let China and America fight over the Spratlys and the winner gets to own Pinas,
and have all the crabs to cook for them, scrub their floors, clean their tubs, and their butts.
No more OFWs. Every crab will be employed as domestic care-giver.
