Can Osama save Obama?

Great historic events are rare and leaders who are gifted to be a part of these must ensure that they are permanently imprinted in the greatness of the moment. US President Barack Obama was posing for history when he announced to the American nation and to the world late evening of May 1st in Washington D.C. that a US operation had killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and took custody of his body.

Well crafted and spoken in a cadence that enhanced the impact of the event, these were the high points of Obama’s announcement:

He clearly established who earns the credit

“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children,” Obama said.

He added: “Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.

“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”

He reminded everybody how much 9/11 had affected them

Obama recalled how it “was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory – hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction.”

He added: “For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda.”

He shared the credit, made many people feel heroic

He said: “On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came together. We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood. We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country. On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.”

He limited the number of their enemies

He said: “As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not — and never will be — at war with Islam.” He added: “Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.”

He justified the War on Terror, a US geopolitical cover

He said: “The American people did not choose this fight. It came to our shores, and started with the senseless slaughter of our citizens.” He added: “Yet as a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people have been killed. We will be relentless in defense of our citizens and our friends and allies. We will be true to the values that make us who we are. And on nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al Qaeda’s terror: Justice has been done.”

He egged Americans to be greater still

He said: “The cause of securing our country is not complete. But tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place.”

The Barack Obama announcement left nothing to chance in affixing his image on the historic moment. Complete with subject and predicate, it ensured Obama’s place in history but will it be enough to have him re-elected?

A Gallup poll conducted after the announcement of bin Laden’s death gave Obama a 52 percent approval rating — up six points but ten points lower than when he entered the White House. Can the historic moment offset the economic issues of the 2012 US presidential elections?

For what Obama is turning this US of A into, there is no salvation event, man-made or otherwise to salvage his failed presidency. God help us all and the entire world if he gets re-elected !

  2. GOOD JOB WELL DONE Mr. President. This is the true and real statement of ” Mission Accomplished ” not when Mr. Bush claim his mission accomplish when he landed his jet plane in the US Navy Carrier ” . Kudos to you Mr. President , to the CIA Director Mr. Paneta and all the hard work of the intelligence community who pinpointed the hiding place of Bin Laden, and above all also to all the brave Navy Seals commandos who end and applied justice to Osama bin Laden. Inded this will be a Historical Moment in history .

  3. For all your informations:

What the Republicans can not do, the Democrats did it again so smoothly under the leadership of the Commander in Chief President Obama. Of coarse we won’t forget this to thank you in your next election.

Pres.Obama did what is best for USA and the world..what his critics in particular the GOP can not see is that Osama bin Laden was the cause of economic woes that Obama inhereted from the previous Bush administration. The conservatives can not accept whatever good decision Obama made for the benefit of the nation. The aim of the conservatives is for Obama not to be re-elected,thats why they spread all negative tactics to put him down.Obama do not brag his numerous achievements and works hard to unite the nation while the conservatives tend to brag on negative issues and spread lies…!

Your open ended question brings to fore a question Liberals hope to capitalize on. Over a week after the incident, Obama is still riding on the euphoria of Osama’s death. OBL’s death or capture was bound to happen and Obama happened to be the President when it happened and so he gets the credit. In truth, however, if Liberals had their way, Osama would still be enjoying his “protective custody” status in Pakistan. It was George W. Bush’s waterboarding policy on KSM (what the Liberal Democrats call “torture”) in Gitmo ( the prison Obama pledged to close) that led to the courier that finally led to Osama. Ironically, the Obama admistration is still bent on prosecuting some CIA interrogators for doing a good job in gleaning intel from the imprisoned terrorists.

It is not enough to just repeat the conservative talking point of “failed Presidency”. One has to state why one thinks so. Have you reviewed your portfolio latelly?
Right now this President has 56% approval rating…meaning 56% disagree with J.M. Montero just as I do. Besides, it just a little more than two years and this President’s leadership did what his predecessor could not do in eight years. Now, tell us whose Presidency is failed.
Let us give credit where credit is due. I agree with R.Q.Garcia…WELL DONE Mr. President and the rest of the team.

  7. Pablo Montenegro says:

“Save” Obama? I never understood that. This is NOT a failed presidency. What has failed is this country’s racism. I’m not surprised many Filipinos have racial prejudices which they don’t even realize. In fact, it’s downright psychotic when they themselves aren’t white.

Give the man a chance to perform his duties, y’all. Which I think, is well done considering the biases he has to face. It should be easy considering he’s following the worst presidency and policies which we’re still suffering through in the history of this country.

  8. Next year bin Laden is but a faint memory to most of the amnesiac voters.
    It’s still the economy.
President Obama shored up the US economy from sliding to a catastrophic depression. 2012 will not be a year of prosperity…but from a slow and painful recovery–especially the disastrous housing market. Wisdom of enough US voters, President Obama should be able to stay beyond his first term.
It will not be a breeze. But enough Americans will be able to discern that President Obama deserves a full 8-year term—for the sake of the many who clamor for an end to US involvement in two wars in the Middle East and for the people who want to rein in the control of the monopolistic drug, oil and banking industries over the lives of the majority of the American people who also need health care that makes sense.
Deadly viruses like bin Laden don’t thrive on a healthy and robust country. The prescription calls for an extended Obama Presidency.

Bill Maher was spot on with what he said in these 3 uber hilarious videos: (the original video in YouTube was asked to be deleted by HBO but there is a copy here so watch this video most specially ’cause it is simply hilarious)

The GOP and their fan club would always refer to the media as “liberal” yet i can’t see why they put down the media so much when the GOP, their fans and the Teabaggers are always given “EQUAL TIME” or the so-called “liberal news” always cover these people ad nauseum. The GOP of course do not want to talk about their disastrous 8 years. They don’t want to talk about their false pretexts that they used to go into IRAQ, how the war drained our economy, how so few, except for some well-connected people & corporations, benefitted from the war, their failure to capture OBL, what they did to the surplus left by Pres. Clinton, etcetera etcetera. It took them 8 years to run the economy to the ground and they’re already whining to the world how bad the economy is with Pres. Obummer at the helm for only a year. LOL! Well…what a tough crowd to please! LOL! As if they can do better. HAHAHAHA! All they want is for this president to fail. Apparently, there’s just been too much good news about President Obama. The capture of OBL, the dignified visit to NYC, then to Kentucky to personally thank the SEALS Team Six members, and being referred to as “Comforter-In-Chief”. We can’t have that. OH NO SIREE BOB!

I’m sure the “liberal media” will not ask them these tough questions:

    1) How is that you blame the pres. for the bad decisions that you made (2 wars, two tax cuts for the rich, medicare part D, financial meltdown, recession, etc) and now you want to take credit for his leadership in capturing OBL?

    2) Why is that you blame President Clinton for 9/11 when it happened on your watch while everyones hair was on fire and you had a Dubya that said OBL was determined to strike in the USA? And what about that surplus you inherited?

    3) Do you take any responsibility for the fact that your irresponsible and reckless decision to invade Iraq took away precious resources that probably prevented the capture of OBL years ago?

    4) Why was the unit created to capture OBL disbanded in 2005? Let me just stress the word “DISBANDED.” ‘Cause it was “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”? LMAO!

    5) Why did President Bush say on several occasions that he just didn’t think that much about OBL?

    6) Why can’t you give President Obama the credit he deserves for focusing like a laser on getting OBL and making it a top priority?

    7) After 9/11, the country rallied around President Bush. If anyone dared say anything negative about President Bush you would say they were unpatriotic and Un-American. Why have the rules changed for President Obama?

    8) Days before capturing OBL, President Obama was forced to produce his long form birth certificate because of Republican Donald Trump. Will you say this morning that the birther nonsense must stop?

    9) Senate Republicans have introduced legislation to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency, established 40 years ago by President Richard Nixon to give Americans clean air and water. The bill, introduced by Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), would merge the EPA, which enforces environmental laws, with the Department of Energy, which manages nuclear energy and energy research, into one department. Are you guys crazy? ROFL!

  10. Timothy Soliven says:

Joe Scarborough, an ex-Republican congressman says, that if you get up, go to work, punch a clock and you vote Republican, you’re voting against yourself. Ain’t that the truth?

Did anyone see the blue fact sheet that was put out on energy and gas prices? I think the Pres. will have to keep hammering home the facts about domestic oil production and clean energy. The American people are laboring under so many misconceptions about oil and gas prices. Take a look:

WE have to do our part, too…SPREAD THE WORD, PASS IT ON!

I know it happens sometimes….the temptation to vote Republican. When you feel like going over to the Dark Side, think of what happened in the previous administration. Think of what happened to past administration whose answer to all our problems was give tax cuts to the rich and their friends. Conservatives don’t believe that government should serve public needs, that instead government should be privatized and shrunk to fit in a bathtub, as if governing would disappear with government. But governing doesn’t disappear when government shrinks; instead corporations come to govern your life — like HMO’s, oil companies, drug companies, agribusiness, and so on, with accountability only to maximizing profit, not to public needs. No one earns a living or lives well without protection and empowerment by the government. That is what taxes pay for. And the more you make from what the government gives you, the more you should contribute to keeping it going.

  11. It’s been crystal clear for a very long time that Obama has a core set of beliefs that he religiously (no pun intended) sticks to. Trouble is, he doesn’t seem to recognize that his ideas have destroyed everything they have touched time and time again throughout history. It’s alright… if we survive until next year, the difficult road to Reconstruction -I use that word on purpose- can begin.
