Typhoon Ondoy Update and Pictures
Typhoon Ondoy is the worst typhoon that hit the Philippines in 40 years! I urge the Global Filipinos to bring out the best in the themselves and help our kababayans in any they can.
Now is the time, once again, to show our compassion to our distressed kababayans. They need our help!
Let’s keep the spirit of ‘bayanihan’ alive!

A boy is lifted onto the roof of a building to escape the flooding in the Quezon City suburban of Manila . Nearly a month's worth of rain fell in just six hours Saturday, triggering the worst flooding in the Philippine capital in 42 years, which stranded thousands on rooftops in the city and elsewhere.

Residents clamber on electric wires to stay out of floodwaters while others wade neck-deep in Cainta Rizal, east of Manila .

Terrible, terrible scenes of devastation. Just what could possibly worse to happen in our beloved country? Even nature seems couldn’t be kind.
how can we trust that our money will be used for the people who need it the most? I don’t want to help pay for another Gloria dinner
If you send it to a bona fide and accredited relief agency (e.g., Red Cross), you shouldn’t have to worry about how your money is used. But for sure it will not go to Gloria’s pockets.
If you’re not confident that you’re money would be used for relief, then don’t send your money. The best you can do in this situation is to send your donation to a family member who is in need. A lot of people are doing that.
Best,
Perry

I believe God has a purpose why this happen. It’s the time that the government have to spend the money to put up a decent place for our Kababayan to live in.Please let me know how we can reach the government.
I just heard from the people from Marikina ABS-CBN was there to give them food while the government agencies didn’t show up yet.WHYYYYY, their still thinking if they will give it to the people or they are dividing the money into themselves.
Sorry to say, how can they get out from corruption?I will just pray for them, that God will open their mind and heart to be pure in helping our countrymen.
Please share your blessings to our needy kababayan, lets put ourselves in their situation.
God bless us all and more blessing to come.God will supply our need.

Thank you so much and more power to your great endeavor for us to be updated, God bless you and will keep you on our prayers.
Hi Perry,
I did what you said about giving monetary donations to family who need them and not to others to insure that it will be well spent and gave things in kind to Ang Kapatiran Party.
Jerry Quibilan
Hi Jerry,
That’s great. I did the same thing.
Best,
Perry
We should compare what happened to our country and to Vietnam when the same typhoon, Ketsana, hit Vietnam with an even greater velocity. Before the storm hit, the Vietnamese government, according to wire reports, was able to evacuate 170,000 people. Thus it was able to minimize casualties to only 23 people killed, many hit by falling trees, compared to more than 240 and counting in RP. Can you imagine our government capable of evacuating 170,000 people before a storm breaks? There was sufficient warning by our weather bureau but there was no evacuation effort or warning for evacuation by our government. After the disaster, no adequate rescue or relief efforts. That only shows the indifference and inefficiency of our government. It only knows how to demolish squatters’ shanties to force their destitute inhabitants to move without government help and give way to wealthy land developers.
I agree with Dino, which is why I’m not willing to donate in kind. Prayers is all I can do at this distance but also, suggesting to my parents to open up our house in Makati for temporary relief.
Yes indeed, Mr. Diaz, the distinctly Filipino “bayanihan” spirit is needed now more than ever, and, thankfully, it seems to be there in spades, with Filipinos from all walks of life, both here in the Philippines as well as those abroad, doing what they can to contribute to the rescue, relief, and restoration efforts. The government has of course been incredibly pro-active in trying to put together the pieces of the lives and homes destroyed by Ondoy, apparently the worst storm to have hit the Philippines since 1967, which is saying a lot seeing as our country is one of those dozen-storms-a-year types.
As President Arroyo herself emphasized, this typhoon is a “once in a lifetime” occurrence, “an extreme event whose record rainfall strained our response capabilities to the limit, and accordingly, the government will continue rescue operations “until the last of our countrymen in peril is accounted for.”
The President, who has always been one to lead by example, has yet again set the standard for Filipinos everywhere through her and her family’s immediate, open, and grounded approach in providing relief and shelter to the multitudes who are in dire need of it. Her unprecedented move to open the Palace grounds to those made homeless by Ondoy, along with the transformation of Kalayaan Hall into a relief operations center, is proof positive of this.
Oplan Sagip Bayan, as it has been aptly titled, personally being overseen by Presidential Management Staff chief Secretary Hermogenes Esperon and the DSWD, is now in full flow, and is a shining beacon of the kind of unity, or “bayanihan”, that is required from all of us at this time of crisis. As one volunteer puts it, “Dito walang mayaman, walang mahirap. We all came together to help the victims. I feel so happy to help, to be part of this worthwhile endeavor.”

To ordinary Filipinos, it’s “Bayanihan”. But to Malacanang crooks, it’s BAYAGNIHAN.

“Bayanihan” is the Filipino’s strength and that’s what keeps us together in times of crisis.

I understand your concerns. But if you really want to help, you can contact ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya. You need to trust NGO people who’s doing their best trying to put together the pieces of the lives and homes destroyed by Ondoy.
Again, people who want to help don’t really complain.
Kababayan sa mga first world countries, tulongan natin ang ating mga napinsalang Kababayan in the form of monies, groceries and clothes we can spare. Huwag ibigay sa mga agencia (private, gov’t or religious, even Red Cross) at mawawala yan. We can send monies thru our concerned relatives (via western union, metro-bank, PNB, etc) in the Phil and will dole out the monies directly to our suffering Kababayan. I hope our religious orders(Iglesia ni Cristo, Catholico, Sacsi, etc.,will do the same regardless of beliefs). We’re all God’s creations. This calamity is so humongous beyond our control. It happens once in every 700 years like Mt. Pinatubo. Don’t blame the dams, they have overflowed. For the Catholics and Iglesia, divert your collections to the needy Kababayan and not to beautify your churches and temples. You’re not like the Pope who lives in the luxurious Gandolfo Palace waiting for all kinds of donations to maintain his lifestyle.
I volunteered to go with the entourage going to Marikina yesterday morning . The city will deliver the much needed help for the flood victims: potable/drinking water; ready to eat food; sacks of rice, dump truck, rain boots, warm bodies and an encouraging spirit from an agency who knew how it is to go through similar devastation.
I remembered how in November of 2004, I was part of the LAKBAY ARAL group who visited Marikina to bench mark with several departments to learn how Marikina got to where it was then. When we entered the pink bridge then, they said we were in Marikina and I was really very impressed! It seemed to me that I was no longer in any part of the Philippines . It was very clean, very orderly and everyone sports that very contagious smile.
Yesterday, that scenery seemed like just a beautiful dream, because as we entered the pink bridge, the nightmare unfolded. There was mud all over, and as we got closer to the center of governance, it was truly heartbreaking- not only were the streets full of mud, there was litter everywhere; garbage left and right; all sorts of vehicles parked on the side of the streets- muddy and a lot with dents, and some were literally crushed.
The garbage told a different story- it was not the usual irresponsible dumping. The bulk is composed of soiled beddings, soaked appliances, wrecked furniture, toys, shoes, clothing, and even wall paneling and ceiling. It makes you feel the whole city dumped their belongings outside their homes.
I can’t even imagine the feeling of the occupants who when tired do not even have a chair to sit on; a bed to lie on; and most have no stove where they could cook… the stoves got soaked in muddy water, the LPG tank floated and got lost (taken by the current or stolen by looters); and worst, even if they have money there were no vendors because 95% of the businesses were submerged in at least 4 to 30 feet of water.
Where will they start?
Mayor Marides Fernando received us in her conference room. The whole first floor of the city hall was being cleansed of mud. “Mano-mano” was the order of the day. There was no power so there is no way then can use their power sprayer, their generators, rescue vehicles & ambulances; fire trucks, heavy equipments, computers and books of records were not spared. Service delivery is completely paralyzed as 95% of their employees fell victim to the rampage.
But Marikina has one big hope- Mayor Marides, a symbol of the strength of a woman.
I only saw her on tv and in some bill boards. She is a lot prettier in person. She looks tired but she refuses to give up. She is the epitome of a real mother. Her moves are calculated and sure. She will restore the “kitchen” first- full blast restoration of the public market so the people can have something to eat. She promised the citizenry the market will be in full operation today.
While she and Mayor Oca were talking, I noticed she was wearing only socks with her pink blouse and dark pants. I took a second glance and I was sure. We left her office while she was still being interviewed by ABS CBN. As we exited the conference door, I saw a pair of muddy red boots- I figured she was straight from field when she learned we have arrived.
As we headed to our Rosa, we saw people in green t-shirts bringing heavy loads in big plastic bags which looked like packed meals and right behind them are two water trucks from the Office of the Governor of Cavite . And as we headed home, two fire trucks from Angeles City came in view.
That cleared the lump in my throat. And as we moved further away from Marikina , we saw drop off points for donations for Marikina , mounds and mounds of relief goods for the city who suffered great devastation, worse than Mt. Pinatubo eruption for Pampanga.
When I got home, I was certain Marikina will rise again to its former glory and will restore its strength drawn from people who cared like Mayor Oca and other cities and municipalities that walked the extra mile.
I learned a lot from Marikina . I thank God that when it was Pampanga who suffered nature’s wrath, most houses were spared from the damage inside; He gave us a Mayor who genuinely cared; and we had the opportunity to share God’s goodness through the resources He bestowed upon our City and for the people behind the scene in the restoration and maintenance- the GSO, BMU, the volunteers, NGO’s & GO’s who lend a helping hand. God’s love abounds through them.

my friends in Philippines were also victimized by the flooding caused by Typhoon Ondoy. i just hope that you guys could recover soon from this natural disaster. `
Kawawa talaga yung mga nabiktima ng Typhoon Ondoy, buti na lang at medyo naka-recover na tayo ngayon. ~
