Palin-Biden Debate: Sarah Palin’s 18 Lies

Friday, October 03, 2008
John Aravosis (DC)

SARAH PALIN’S 18 LIES TONIGHT

1. FANNIE MAE/FREDDIE MAC: Palin said “it was John McCain who pushed so hard with the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reform measures,” but fact checkers say that’s “Quite A Stretch” And “Barely True,” and that McCain was a “latecomer” to the discussion.

2. FUNDAMENTALS ARE STRONG: Palin tried to say “John McCain saying our economy was strong” but McCain has used the phrase “The Fundamentals Of The Economy Are Strong” At Least 16 Times This Year.

3. PARTISAN POLITICS: Palin said McCain is “known for putting partisan politics aside to just get the job done,” but he has voted with Bush 90% of the time in the Senate and bragged about his support for Bush on important issues.

4. TAXES ATTACK: Palin repeated the attack that Obama voted for higher taxes 94 times, which the New York Times says is “false,” CNN says is “Misleading,” and FactCheck.org says is “inflated.”

5. TOBACCO REGULATION: Palin said to “look at the tobacco industry” as an example of McCain pushing for even harder and tougher regulations. But McCain opposed expanding the SCHIP children’s health insurance program for 5.8 million children because it would increase tobacco taxes.

6. SPENDING INCREASES: Palin said Obama is is proposing “nearly a trillion dollars in new spending,” but didn’t mention that he has also proposed cuts to balance it out, an attack CNN has already debunked as “misleading” and that ignores the far larger cost of McCain’s tax cuts and spending hikes.

7. HEALTH CARE: Palin claimed Obama’s health plan is “government run” which has been widely debunked as a “canard.”

8. HEALTH CARE. Palin says taxes wouldn’t go up under the McCain health care plan, a fact even his own campaign has acknowledged isn’t true.

9. TROOPS: Palin repeated what the AP called the “highly misleading” attack that Obama opposed funding for the troops, and Factcheck.org notes that the same methodology would lead to the same conclusion for McCain.

10. GLOBAL WARMING: Palin said “I don’t want to argue about the causes” for global warming, when she has clearly taken the position that she doesn’t not believe it is man-made.

11. MCCAIN IS CONSISTENT: Palin said McCain” doesn’t tell one thing to one group and then turns around and tells something else to another group,” when that is exactly what he has done on immigration, telling Hispanic leaders he was for comprehensive reform instead of the enforcement focused approach he has taken with conservatives.

12. MCCLELLAN NOT MCKIERNAN: Palin referred to the US commander in Afghanistan, David McKiernan as “McClellan.”

13. MCKIERNAN ON “SURGE:” Palin said that [McKiernan] did not say a surge wouldn’t work in Afghanistan, when just yesterday he said “The word I don’t use for Afghanistan is ’surge,’ ” McKiernan stressed, saying that what is required is a “sustained commitment” to a counterinsurgency effort that could last many years and would ultimately require a political, not military, solution

14. KILLING CIVILIANS. Palin said “Obama had said that all we’re doing in Afghanistan is air raiding villages and killing civilians and such a reckless, reckless comment and untrue comment again hurts our cause. That’s not what we are doing there.” Unfortunately, the Associated Press says that Obama was right in discussing a critically important point about avoiding civilian casualties.

15. TEACHING: Palin said we need to make sure “that education in either one of our agendas, I think, absolute top of the line,” when McCain has repeatedly favored tax cuts for the wealthy over funds for more teachers and class size reduction.

16. PARTISAN APPOINTMENTS: Palin said “You do what I did as governor. And you appoint people regardless of party affiliation. Democrats, independents, Republicans, you walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk” when she repeatedly appointed friends and supporters to positions for which they weren’t qualified.

17. FOCUS ON CLIMATE CHANGE: Palin falsely claimed that she was the first governor to form a climate change subcabinet, when at least 28 states had already taken action.

18. DARFUR DIVESTMENT: Palin claimed that “when I and others” found out that the state had money invested in Sudan that “we called for divestment,” when the reality is that Palin’s appointees worked to kill a Darfur divestment plan.

    Perry,

This is a pro Obama gabbledegook and comments are generally unsubstantiated. Balita should be a balanced newsletter. I am writing this in protest.

  2. Perry says:

Last night’s debate had no surprises; no fireworks, no gaffs on either side that was remarkable. byden’s remarks just showed he did have more experience that people already knew about. while Palin just showed more of her personality and cited a bbit more about her running mate. The question is what will the undecided voter think; will that voter be persuaded either way by what they witnessed last night?

America was very lucky it had men in place who were experienced politicians who stepped easily into the shoes of the Presidency they had to fill immmediately.

Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, and Gerald Ford….they rose to great heights, and did adequate jobs.

Will Sarah be able to do the same, given what we now know about her?

  3. willam makabenta says:

Biden wasn’t truthful in a lot of things he said. Cite that also. You can start with Biden’s comment about the Article I of the Constitution, qoute” Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president we’ve had probably in American history. The idea he doesn’t realize that Article 1 of the Constitution defines the role of the vice president of the United States, that’s the Executive Branch. He works in the Executive Branch. He should understand that. Everyone should understand that.”
It is Article 2 that provides the Executive branch their enumerated powers. Article 1 is for the legislature.”
Here’s what the McCain camp noted:
    1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

    2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

    3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

    4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

    5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

    6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

    7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

    8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

    9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

    10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

    11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

    12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

    13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

    14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

“What am I talking about? Stand up Chuck. Let’s go to Seven11 and Dunkin Doughnuts and make fun of those guys with accents. Let’s go watch some tv just like FDR. God love ya!”

  4. Are we to believe that Biden did no “lies” at all during the debate? That what he said was gospel truth, devoid of distortions, inaccurasies or just plain lies ?Your readers are not that stupid, Perry. For if you think that way, how degrading of you to have a readership of “stupid ” readers. For no doubt, any average impartial American could easily refute point-by-point the so-
called “lies” of Palin, as fabricated by Aravosis. All these months I’ve been your
faithful reader, believing that what you’re writing about the evils and corruption of the Arroyo regime are all true and balanced reporting, as I am not there to know it personally. Now I am having serious doubts on the authenticity of your reporting of the Arroyo scandals. For it reflects the way you brazenly twist the truth of the U.S. political landscape. I now realize that you are just one of those biased and brazenly partisan
liberal, neo-leftist mediaperson who will not hesitate to use his forum to advance the agenda of the far left. If I’m wrong, the least you can do is present the side the other party. I know you cannot do that. Because somehow, you are just unmasking youself.

  5. Rene Acacio says:

Check all the facts first before you print such supposedly untruths. We all know that those organizations mentioned are biased and liberal.
I lived in Illinois for 34 years. Note that Obama was a state senator
there for 8 years and a junior senator in Congress for 2 years. Look
at his record during all those years. He has no SIGNIFICANT legislative
record for all those years. What has he done for the people of Illinois
in the last 2 years? He ran for the senate promising a lot of things but
as soon as he won, he started running for the presidency.
A major crisis that occured in the last few years was the medical mal-
practice crisis which resulted in a lot of doctors, especially those in high
risk specialties, leaving the state. Where was Obama in the middle of
this crisis? A bill capping liability payments was passed eventually , but
is now in jeopardy because of a judgment that it was unconstitutional.
The only significant (sic!) legislative record that Obama has when he
was state senator was voting yes three times for a partial birth abor-
tion bill. He stated that his objection to a ban on partial birth abortion
was because it did not follow the federal law. The bill was changed to
comply with the federal law and he still did not vote for its ban. The
constitution states one has the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness. Even a fetus, especially one that has reached full term
    has a right to live.

  6. Perry says:

    Hi Oscar,

In any election year, a lot of information are spread around. Some are true and some are lies. Some are substantiated and some aren’t. That’s politics in America. But that’s better than shooting at each other like what they do in some Third World countries.

It’s up to the voters to make their decision whom to believe. And the candidate who is more believable usually wins the election. It is not a perfect process; however, it gives the voters complete freedom of choice and expression.

I know you are for Palin. Honestly, I cannot and would not support Palin because, in my opinion, she is not qualified for the position of Vice President and, God forbid, President.

I am a Republican and has supported and worked for every Republican presidential candidate since Reagan in 1983. I endorsed McCain before the California primary; however, his choice of Palin is something that I cannot support. In my opinion, McCain selected Palin hoping that it would help him get elected as President. That is wrong. That is not “Country First.” That’s is “Me First.”

By the way, Romney would have been a good choice. I would have supported and worked for a McCain/Romney ticket.

    Best,
    Perry

  7. MollyMolly1991 says:

    Perry,
It’s a comfort to know that people see Sarah Palin for what she really is – an ambitious ‘B’ of a politician. I was a single mom for over 12 yrs until my son and I met and married my husband. I fear for my son’s ‘future America’ should McCain and Palin ticket wins. I wonder what the Gwich’in Indians of Alaska (see ‘Oil on Ice’ documentary) thought of their Mighty Governor advertising their natural/wildlife santuaries to go ‘Drill Baby, drill!’. British Petroluem must love Palin’s husband in their payroll especially if McCain wins and Alaska opens for drilling… hmmm…

  8. Barangay says:

Now I know that you are just one of those talented person but have a poor common sense, like those Media with biased and brazenly partisan liberal! I speak for myself. I’m democrat but do not like Obama. I will not gloryfied person that I do not like, I go with my instinct. Day one I saw this person I have negative feeling and before all issue comes out in news especially in internet I already know in my mind. One community leader keeps asking me why I do not like this person? First his root do not believe that there is God. He went to school where the terriorist go, He is being supported by bad people financially. It’s even mention in the bible the future of this country with this person. Whom do you think I believe the mouth of media or my instinct that is happening? Is it true that this person already paid those media? I watch the debates of Biden-Palin in Fox Channel and right there 87% voted for Palin and 13% for Biden when I go to CNN and other bias channel, it’s the reverse report and what I notice they focus on Biden more than Palin. Something is wrong! I lost respect to those supposed to be talented community leader who are all bias like you.

  9. Noel Verzosa says:

A voter should never based his choice on campaign rhetoric. Campaign rhetoric is designed to overblow a candidate’s qualifications and diminish the other’s. Don’t based your choice on experience either. You don’t need experience to be president otherwise George Bush would not have been president. He was a first-term governor. So was Jimmy Carter. John Kennedy was a junior senator. And how does one get presidential experience anyway? It is easy enough to check out a candidate’s record of accomplishments – in his youth and in his professional life. By all accounts, Barrack Obama was a brilliant student. You don’t get to be editor of the Harvard Law Journal for being good-looking. By being the first black student to be so chosen even adds more luster to this accomplishment. But I question his judgment in his experimentation with cocaine and his sitting through the hate-filled sermons of Reverend Wright. John McCain served this country with courage and dignity but that doesn’t make him the better canditate either. I question his self-aggrandizing claim as a reformer. He was part of the Republican Party that controlled Congress for 10 years whose legacy was uncontrolled spending, entitlements, earmarks and record-breaking deficits. If he was a reformer, he wasn’t very effective, was he? He went along with every budget-busting legislation proposed by his party. I question his leadership when he made a big show of leaving the campaign and going back to Washington to work for the passage of the financial rescue bill the first time. As it turned out, two-thirds of Republicans voted no, dooming the bailout. He failed to rally the members of his own party. Lastly, I question his judgment for choosing Sarah Palin, he person he met for the first time in his life two hours before the made the announcement. Don’t tell me she is more qualified than Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee or even Rudy Guiliani because that insults my intelligence.

  10. Paul Dalde says:

Biden has 35 years of experience to get materials built for the last debate with Sara Palin, yet he had 36 misstatements, untruthful and untrue.

Palin had only less than 5 weeks to cram with McCain’s campaign. She stand on her ground, mispronouncing names that are understandable to mainsteam Amemricans, who are the beneficiary of the exchanges on information. That said, Sara’s misstatements are pardonable; not the grand father of the Senate, part of the stone walling force to oppose Bush streamlining the financial sector of the country; Biden who is dabbed the expert in all areas of discussion of American politics, is a guffing maniac like his senior running mate, Obama.

Democrats like to point imaterial mistakes by Palin and hide every thing major or mundane mistakes and lies, to show Barack is the guy, not knowing what really is Obama up to. Be ware my fellow Americans, you might get what is hidden from you by Obama’s operatives.

  12. Yoly Tubalinal says:

In my opinion, everything John McCain did right prior to his candidacy was wiped out by this one bad choice, Sarah Palin.

His Country First slogan is now a big question mark to those who, like me, believe that he obviously put his candidacy first before his country with his bad choice of a vice president.

  13. Dick Aquino says:

    Dear Perry,

I know the feeling of a messenger. You always get the best gratitudes and the bad critiques.

Here is a quick look into 3 former Fannie Mae Executives who have played big on
Wall Street. Franklin Raines was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at
Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae when
auditing discovered severe irregulaties in Fannie Mae’s accounting activities.
At the time of his departure The Wall Street Journal noted, ” Raines, who long
defended the company’s accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn’t
proper, issued a statement late Tuesday conceding that “mistakes were made” and
saying he would assume responsibility as he had earlier promised. News reports
indicate the company was under growing pressure from regulators to shake up its
management in the wake of findings that the company’s books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four
years.” Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion. Raines left with a
“golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit
against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear.
    http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/
    . The Government noted,
“The 101 charges reveal how the individuals improperly manipulated earnings to
maximize their bonuses, while knowingly neglecting accounting systems and
internal controls, misapplying over twenty accounting principles and misleading
the regulator and the public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years
of misleading and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital
reports that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner.”
These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return $50 Million
Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated Fannie Mae profits. Tim Howard – Was the Chief Financial
Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard “was a strong internal proponent of using
accounting strategies that would ensure a “stable pattern of earnings” at
Fannie. In everyday English – he was cooking the books. The Government
Investigation determined that, “Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to
provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie
Mae,” On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice Department
to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to
Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-finance
giant’s income statement to achieve management pay bonuses. Investigations by
federal regulators and the company’s board of directors since concluded that
management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard
resigned under pressure in late 2004. Howard’s Golden Parachute was estimated at
$20 Million! Jim Johnson – A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his
position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise
    Oversight’s May 2006 report
on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you’ll see some
interesting things about Johnson. Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden
a substantial amount of Johnson’s 1998 compensation from the public, reporting
that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million.”
Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from
Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae.

Johnson’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

    WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
FRANKLIN RAINES? Raines works for the Obama Campaign as Chief Economic
AdvisorTIM HOWARD? Howard is also a Chief Economic Advisor to ObamaJIM JOHNSON?
Johnson hired as a Senior Obama Finance Advisor and was selected to run Obama’s
Vice Presidential Search CommitteeIF OBAMA PLANS ON CLEANING UP THE MESS – HIS ADVISORS HAVE THE EXPERTISE -
THEY MADE THE MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Would you trust the men who tore Wall Street down to build the New Wall Street ?

Well here is one for BIDEN/OBAMA….are this truth or lies?

    I know,,,,, I know,,,, Palin/McCain say’s it is true……. is it…?

    Hi Dick,

Obama is the one running for President, not the three stooges from Fannie Mae.

  15. Martin says:

I read all comments on the” Palin’s 18 Lies” and I appreciate them all except the one written by Gene Derayunan. From the outset, he forgot that Perry is just the messenger yet he criticized him for posting the article written by somebody else. It’s not fair. He cast some doubts on previous commentaries by Perry on the situation in the Philippines and Gloria M. Arroyo’s massive corruption JUST because Perry posted the
“Lies” article. How shallow can anyone be. I am avid reader of Perry’s commentaries and I respectfully disagree with him from time to time but never questioned his motives.
